THE YIPS

Friday, 4 March 2016 9:50:46 PM Australia/Sydney

If you suffer from the yips or are starting to develop them, you have my sympathy. You have even greater sympathy if you have been told a “cure” for the yips e.g. the claw grip or similar and that while you may have experienced temporary relief it is not a cure.

So after years of reading and researching I am not convinced that anyone can cure the yips. I am sure, however, that most people, almost all, can putt without yipping.

THE PROFESSOR ON TIGER WOODS

Friday, 4 March 2016 9:49:31 PM Australia/Sydney

Right now Tiger Wood’s golf game is the hot topic. Journalists and commentators are having a ball; some might describe it as a frenzied feast. The sharks are circling.

But no one has written about his putting being part of his general demise. Let me add a few words that might shed new light on Tiger’s recent performances.

THE PROFESSOR HAS HIS SAY: NO PRACTICE PUTTING.

Friday, 4 March 2016 9:40:13 PM Australia/Sydney

There are some golfers in the world who don’t or won’t practice their putting, have little inclination to warm up with a few putts on the practice green before they go out to play, still have the same putter they used forty years ago, refuse to take advice and say they are too old or can’t be bothered to change their ways but still want to beat their mates in their weekly golf.

OPEN LETTER TO ADAM SCOTT

Friday, 4 March 2016 9:34:42 PM Australia/Sydney

Adam Scott has to start all over again. Research suggests that learning a new style is better than trying to fix/cure an old approach. So Adam, ditch the long putter, grab a short putter and get your brain around a new way to putt.

The effervescent Melbourne teaching Professional Damian Magaton says: “It’s called a putting stroke, not a putting hit”. Adam, stroke the ball, don'’t hit it. That is the first part of the putting philosophy. Understand that golfers will sink more 10 foot putts and have less three putts if they stroke the ball. Those golfers who hit their putts sink lots of three footers but not much else.

JORDAN SPEITH& THE NO LOOK PUTT

Friday, 4 March 2016 9:33:27 PM Australia/Sydney

Jordan Speith goes through his putting routine…ball position, stance, grip, aiming, has one last look at the ball…. and instead of looking back at the ball, he keeps his eyes on his target and putts!! With great success.

So what is going on?

This NO LOOK approach to putting has been around for a while.

HOW TO MAKE THE MOVE FROM THE LONG PUTTER TO THE SHORT STICK

Friday, 4 March 2016 9:28:32 PM Australia/Sydney

The long stick’s appeal was in having an anchor point on the body. Long Stick golfers used this anchor to employ a pendulum stroke and be competitive on the greens. But as from January 1, 2016, anchoring the putter as described in Rule.14-1, is verboten.

The RANDA and USGA (after great deliberation, discussion and consultation) both agreed that the notion “the player freely swings the entire club” is consistent with the spirit of the game.

7 WAYS TO BETTER PUTTING

Friday, 4 March 2016 9:24:42 PM Australia/Sydney

Keep your lower body steady.

When I was based in a Golf Outlet in Melbourne many golfers would come in and ask for a heavy putter. “I can’t get my putts up to the hole” they would say. “Before you do that let me look at your putting stroke.” I would ask. And I tell you that every single golfer who came in looking for a heavy putter either rotated their hips while putting or slid their hips towards the target (lateral shift) or a combination of both.
